Chief Turnbull is responsible for the existence of Rural Metro and the improved fire protection in Josephine County. His vision and desire to improve the safety of the citizens of Josephine County led to the start of Valley Fire Service. He continues to serve the community as a member of the Josephine County Emergency Management board, the Rogue Valley Fire Chief’s Association, The Oregon Fire Chief’s Association (of which he has been bestowed a lifetime achievement award), working with the Josephine County 911 Agency, and numerous local, state and national professional and community organizations.

Steve started with Valley Fire Service in 1988 after a few years as a volunteer firefighter in Jacksonville. His functions include administration, overseeing fire prevention and public education programs, facilities, the fleet of emergency and staff vehicles as well as information services and technology for Rural Metro Fire in Josephine County. He continues to respond to calls for service as an on-call duty officer. Steve holds a Bachelors degree in business management from Oregon State University. Steve currently serves on the Josephine County Emergency Medical Services board. Outside of his professional life, Steve is active in his church in a variety or roles including working with high school students.


Austin Prince

Chief Prince started with Valley Fire Service in 1988 as a reserve firefighter and rose through the ranks to his present position. Chief Prince is responsible for the field operations of the department, including the emergency and non-emergency responses, and training of the staff and dedicated reserve force. He has actively been involved in many aspects of community safety including the Josephine County 911 Technical Advisory Committee and the Rogue Interagency Training Association. Chief Prince actively responds to calls for service and acts as the on-call duty officer routinely.
