Rural Metro Fire Department has been providing fire and emergency medical services to Carefree residents since 1968.

Rural Metro operates on contractual basis with the Town of Carefree. This means fire protection and emergency medical services are paid through taxes and residents are not responsible for a establishing a fire service account directly with Rural Metro Fire.

In the Carefree area, Rural Metro has one primary responding fire station, bringing the total in Maricopa County to nine. There are five firefighters on duty at all times, including at least one paramedic.

Rural Metro Fire crews in the Carefree area are led by Fire Chief John Kraetz.
