Rural Metro Fire Department

Rural Metro Central Arizona

A MESSAGE FROM THE CHIEF

I am proud to serve alongside the dedicated public servants who are the firefighters serving all of you living in the unincorporated areas of Maricopa and Pinal Counties. Collectively, we are dedicated to the mission of protecting the lives and property of the residents and visitors in the event of a fire, medical emergency, disaster, or other event where assistance is needed.

Unlike other areas of the United States or municipalities in Arizona, your property is not protected by tax-funded services, meaning that without a Rural Metro Fire membership, you would be responsible for the full cost of any emergency response to your home. More importantly, however, it is that a Rural Metro Fire membership enhances life safety emergency response and community resilience in your area. Your membership supports the ability of Rural Metro Fire to provide the firefighters, fire engines, and training necessary to meet your community’s life safety needs.

Since 1962, Rural Metro Fire has been the trusted fire provider in our community. Our membership model is built on community participation. Every member makes us stronger. Please join with us in making our neighborhoods safer and more resilient!

Who We Are

The Rural Metro Fire Department pioneered private fire protection. Rural Metro was founded in Arizona in 1948 and grew into one of the most influential models of non-municipal fire service in the United States.

In the early years, Rural Metro quickly expanded services to unprotected communities. By 1952, it was serving the then-small town of Scottsdale, where its response to a large fire at the Arizona Crafts Center helped establish its reputation as the community’s first organized fire service provider. Over the next decades, the department expanded into Pima County in 1962 and Yuma County in 1971, replacing earlier volunteer or local departments and becoming a key emergency services provider in unincorporated regions of the state.

During this time, the organization merged with Metropolitan Fire in 1959, becoming the Rural Metro Fire Department and solidifying its brand as a leading private fire service provider.
