Chief Steve Nelson is a distinguished fire service professional who began his career in 1982 as a cadet and volunteer firefighter in Jacksonville, Oregon, before joining Rural Metro Fire in 1988. He assumed command of Rural Metro Fire Josephine County on April 3, 2023, following his promotion from Assistant Chief, continuing the legacy of service established by his predecessor, Chief Phil Turnbull.

Throughout his extensive 41-year career in the fire service, Chief Nelson has served in multiple roles with Rural Metro Fire, including engineer, lieutenant, captain, district chief, and assistant chief, demonstrating his commitment to professional growth and comprehensive understanding of fire service operations. His leadership has been instrumental in building the Rural Metro Fire operation into the respected service it is today, earning recognition throughout the Oregon fire service community.

Chief Nelson holds a bachelor’s degree in business administration from Oregon State University, where he graduated cum laude. He is actively involved in several fire service organizations throughout Oregon and brings both academic excellence and decades of practical field experience to his leadership role. His educational background in business administration provides valuable insight into the operational and administrative aspects of modern fire service management.

Beyond his professional duties, Chief Nelson demonstrates a strong commitment to community service. He has served as the IT administrator for River Valley Church since 2012, helping to keep the congregation connected through his technical expertise and dedication to supporting his local community outside of his fire service responsibilities.

Chief Nelson serves locally with Rural Metro Fire’s leadership team and maintains active participation in regional fire service initiatives. His decades of experience in Josephine County and deep roots in the Oregon fire service have provided him with a solid foundation to lead the organization into the future while maintaining the high standards of service the community has come to expect.
